Next race: @ Stotesbury Cup Regatta, May 18th/19th

Brunswick Crew will be sending a Varsity Eight (which races in the category called “Senior Eight”), a Second Eight, and a Freshmen Eight to the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the largest high school regatta in the world, with boats coming from up and down the east coast to compete.

The boys who have been selected to race in Philadelphia will be dismissed from class at 11:30am on Thursday, May 17th. They will be encouraged to grab lunch at school and then to board a coach bus for a noon departure from Maher Avenue.

On Thursday afternoon the team will rig boats and practice on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. They will spend Thursday and Friday nights under the supervision of their three coaches at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Philadelphia at 1800 Market St. — (866) 618-0410. They will have team dinners each evening, but will need to bring some cash for breakfast and lunch foods.

The boys will look to proceed through Time-Trial Heats (no racing starts) to qualify for the Semi-Finals in an effort to gain a place in the Grand Finals on Saturday. So, the possibility exists of an early exit from this highly competitive regatta. Boys must bring academic materials with them as there will be ample time for studying between races.

Founder’s Day Regatta report

The BSBC had a strong showing at the 53rd annual Founder’s Day Regatta — a New England Classic rowed in exclusively four-oared shells. Brunswick’s 1st Varsity Four took 2nd place, finishing behind only the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club (CJRC swept the regatta). In the final race of the day, the four of Matt Podlesak, Corey Juan, Sean Forester, Cooper Briggs, and Tobin Saer bested the top boats from all rival prep schools.

Varsity 4+ at Founder's starting line

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fours each had strong morning heats to earn spots in the Grands, but each took 5th place in their respective Finals.

The 5th four event (in which each team is allowed to enter two fours), Brunswick showed its team depth in earning both the silver and bronze medals behind CJRC’s 5th four.
