2014 Riverfront Regatta Report

Brunswick continued its Fall Rowing racing circuit at the 2014 Head of the Riverfront Regatta in Hartford. Five Brunswick eight-oared shells raced the 2.25 mile upstream course on the Connecticut River.

The Varsity Eight successfully defended their title, winning the Greater Hartford Jaycees Bowl. Brunswick paced the field of 27 boats by 8 seconds in a time of 13:41. Sunday’s boatings: sophomore coxswain Emmett Bell, junior stroke Will Powers, senior Freddie Polak, junior Thomas Kern, senior co-captain Jack Duggan, senior Conor Winston, junior Gamble Freydberg, junior Alexander Kutner, and senior co-captain bowman Chase Stitzer.

In the Second Varsity Eights event, Brunswick’s Second Eight placed 1st of 38 boats. Three Brunswick seniors — stroke David Ruf, co-captain Reed McMurchy, and Gunnar Vorwerk — led the victorious boat from the 4th starting position (last year’s placing). The Third Eight finished 13th of the 38 boats in this same event, 2nd among their boat category.

Most significantly though, Brunswick rowers and coxswains overcame adversity this week with a key member out of each boat line-up.
In the afternoon, the Novice A boat came from deep in the field to place 3rd out of 30 Novice boats.  The Novice B overcame an early equipment issue and rowed to a 15th place finish in the same event.

The team will next be in action on Saturday, October 11th at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta in Shelton, CT.  The following weekend Brunswick will bring 3 boats to the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
